Palms Place Hotel, Las Vegas

Las Vegas isn't a city renowned for its subtlety, especially in the area of hotel accommodation. Bright, brash and gaudy, the properties that dot the famous Strip are more often an exercise in showmanship and spectacle than style or substance. But amidst the relentless construction and the vast sums of money thrown around in pursuit of the next big thing there occasionally comes along an offering that threatens to match the hype

Case in point: the Palms Place Hotel and Spa, which opened in February – a relative oasis amidst the noise and frenzy of endless slot machines and tourists. Nestled behind the Strip but just a hop and a skip from the action, the first thing you'll notice is what's missing: a casino. Nothing against gambling, per se, but in a city with as many card tables as Vegas you'll appreciate the escape.

The interiors of the 47-story tower are modern but elegant – lots of steel, marble, wood and clever lighting – but the real wow factor comes courtesy of the hotel's magnificent spa complex, impressive even by local standards.

Relax, rejuvenate and detoxify in 50,000 square feet of pools, spas, and our favourite, the city's first Hammam, a two-level traditional Turkish bath incorporating indoor hot and cool soaking pools, steam and sauna pods, private outdoor garden lounges and a comprehensive treatment menu. Imagine, a trip to Las Vegas that doesn't leave you needing another holiday.
