Phillips de Pury sale, NYC

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Not an expression heard often in the upper echelons of the design world but one that could be used with much pertinence to explain the success of many. Auctioneers du jour Phillips de Pury & Company are a case in point.

Their latest sale, Design, takes place on 12th June in New York and is further proof they're the coolest outfit on the auction scene. The die cut, Newson-inspired catalogue is beautiful enough to merit auctioning itself. Traditional auction catalogues suffer slightly by being a bit dowdy; in some cases (and no names obviously) you can almost smell the mothballs through the paper. But Phillips’ catalogue is a world apart, designed by hip London outfit John Morgan Studio and proof that well-lit, well-styled photographs only show the lots off better.

In terms of lots, it’s a healthy spread of staple 20th and 21st century names and designs with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. By good measure, in one particular case we mean charity. Following the displacement of his mother and 103-year old grandmother, all proceeds from Philip Michael Wolfson’s ‘Linedesk Pink’ will go to the Make It Right Foundation, helping to rebuild post-Katrina New Orleans.

Elsewhere, we’re excited by a collection of 20 Perriand wall lights, some beautiful Shiro Kuramata creations and giddy for a Prouve ‘Director’ desk in oak and yellow steel. One of the biggest talking points though is likely to be Jeroen Verhoeven’s ‘Cinderella’ table for Demarkersvan. A gawky but enchanting creation, made up of 700 layers of plywood, manufactured and assembled by computer, then finished by hand.
