Albert Watson, Miss Beehayving

Scottish-born photographer Albert Watson will be presenting his latest body of work in his first ever UK solo exhibition from 13 February until 15 March. ‘Miss Beehayving’ sees a departure for Watson from the iconic portraiture of which he made his name back in 1970, instead exploring a darker, seedier side of sin city.

Since meeting Breaunna, dominatrix and burlesque performer, eight years ago at a characterful Rock-A-Billy convention, Watson has been fascinated with her potential as a muse. Focusing on Breaunna’s chameleon-like quality, the photographer captures the world she inhabits both literally and figuratively through a plethora of moods.
‘When you come from a small town in Scotland, and years later you end up with a camera in Las Vegas, it’s truly like being in another galaxy. Breaunna lives in an exotic, erotic world, and that’s what fascinated me’, Watson says of his subject. Using lighting techniques that create a meditative atmosphere, the viewer is drawn into the image and at the same time kept at a voyeuristic distance. The resulting collection makes for a captivating if slightly uncomfortable viewing experience, but definitely one not to miss.
