Industrial Facility exhibition

Epson Picturemate, for Epson, Japan, 2006

Little Disk Hard Drives, for LaCie, France, 2007 / 2008

Innovative design needn't be glamorous or revolutionary. Whether the client brief is to create a space shuttle component for NASA, a concept car for Ford, or a new corkscrew for IKEA, the requisite mental ingredients remain fairly consistent: creativity, originality, and vision.

A new exhibition at the Design Museum will showcase a selection of work from Industrial Facility, a London-based design studio that deliberately embraces the mundane - think coffee makers, toilet brushes and door handles - and applies the rigours of high design to objects most people might otherwise think little about.

Jetlag Travel Clock, for IDEA International, Japan, 2008

Coffee Maker, for Muji, Japan, 2006

Toilet Brush, for Muji, Japan, 2007

Beam Lights, for Established & Sons, England, 2007

Two Timer Clock, for Established & Sons, England, 2008

Since its inception six years ago, the small firm has cultivated an impressive roster of clients: names like Herman Miller, Yamaha, KitchenAid, Whirlpool and Muji, among many others. Much of their work is commissioned for foreign markets so the exhibition will be a first look for most London locals.

Running in tandem is 'Under a Fiver' - a selection of almost one hundred items amassed by Industrial Facility co-founder Sam Hecht over the last fifteen years, all of which cost less than five pounds. That he chooses to collect and surround himself with such items offers an insight into his firm's mentality - at all times simple, functional and smart - and reminds us, as does the exhibition generally, that good design need not sparkle and shine. Sometimes it just has to turn out a good cup of coffee.

Ten Key Calculator, for IDEA International, Japan, 2007

Second Telephone, for Muji, Japan, 2005

Lo Cost Cutlery, for Taylors Eye Witness, England, 2007

IF4000 Knife Rack, for Taylors Eye Witness, England, 2007

Wine Opener, for Muji, Japan, 2008

Cantilever Piano, for Yamaha, Japan, 2008

'Under a Fiver', a collection of objects all costing less than five pounds

The objects were chosen by IF co-founder Sam Hecht

Paper Cup, for Takeo, Japan, 2005

YSL Manifesto video

http://www.wallpaper.com/fashion/ysl-manifesto-video/2109
Once again, Yves Saint Laurent’s Creative Director Stefano Pilati has gone that little bit further than his fashion peers in disseminating news of his Spring/Summer 2008 collection. Following hot on the heels of his groundbreaking multimedia men’s show, Pilati has this time expanded on the success of his manifesto operation that debuted last year.

Concurrent with the catwalk show in Paris, Pilati will distribute a 24-page printed booklet showing the season’s advertising campaign, shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, featuring none other than Kate Moss. The distribution itself is something of a global operation: the manifesto will be given out by hand on the streets of London and Milan on Saturday February 23rd, Tokyo on Sunday 24th, New York and Paris on Tuesday 27th and finally Hong Kong on April 19th. In total a million copies will be dished out, saturating global capitals of cool with YSL’s message.

And for anyone not lucky enough to be handed one personally, they can catch a behind-the-scenes manifesto video, premiering on Monday 25th February on ysl.com. Given we’re not exactly prone to patience when we hear news of such kind, we’ve been given access to a sneak preview on wallpaper.com.

New Comme des Garçons perfume

It's hard not to get excited when Rei Kawakubo does something new. The founder of Japanese label Comme des Garçons has been wowing us for years with her deliciously original approach not only to the creation of avant-garde street fashion but equally to its branding and distribution, something she sees as integral to the design process.

Released this week was Series 8 Energy C, the latest in the company's line of distinct, offbeat fragrances which over the last fourteen years have spanned the olfactory gamut; from Harissa, a spicy ingredient used in African cuisine, to Garage (leather, kerosene and plastic notes), Sticky Cake (almonds, brown sugar and myrrh), and the original 'anti-perfume' Odeur 53, a combination of 53 non-traditional scents including washing drying in the wind, sand dunes, nail polish, and burnt rubber.

Series 8 goes back to basics with three fresh, citrusy variations – grapefruit, lemon and lime – created, as the name suggests, to wake you up and help you feel energized. Our favourite is grapefruit, with notes of blackcurrant and petitgrain over jasmine, mandarin and musk.

Of course if all that sounds a tad delicate, there's always Series 6 Synthetic: Tar. Start the day in urban style smelling of town gas, bitumen, and grilled cigarettes.

THE ULTIMATE (POOL)HOUSE

At first sight you think "OMG I could totally live in this house" but you can't ... first because it is not yours and more importantly because this is not a"house" it's a poolhouse in Connecticut designed by Hariri & Hariri Architecture. But you know what !? I could totally live in such a poolhouse.
